Detox Box | December 2017 – STILL AVAILABLE

The Detox Market describes the box as “a monthly box that allows us to share with you our tried-and-true favorites and game-changing discoveries. Each month you’ll receive products that are universal and exceptional—you know, the “holy grails”. Products that have people complimenting your skin, and asking what you’re doing. At The Detox Market, our search for the best in green beauty isn’t easy, but it’s worth it.
We have strict ingredient standards, high expectations for performance, and a need to connect with the passion behind each brand. The products that make it are proven to be above and beyond.” The box will feature one brand and each box has a guaranteed value of $90.00.

This month’s box included three products from Dr. Alkaitis – a mask, toner, and facial oil. I have never even heard of this brand so really love that the Detox Market includes cards that introduce you to the brand and the founder. I think the education included in the box is a wonderful touch – it gives you some insight into the products and the brand philosophy! This box also came with a booklet/catalog from the brand itself that gave detailed information on the history of the brand, quality standards, products, skincare regimens, and ingredients. This month’s Detox Box has a total value of $143.00.

Dr. Alkaitis has a PhD in Physical Chemistry and created his brand with the philosophy that “if you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.” He takes a wholistic view that skincare goes beyond topical treatments and a complete picture of  good lifestyle choices lead to a healthy body and healthy skin. Dr. Alkaitis produce their products in their own factory and source their ingredients from producers that they have a person relationship with.

Organic Universal Mask – The mask is like a green juice for your skin (and it smells like!) that feed your face with superfoods such as Alfalfa, Wheatgrass, Chlorella, and Spirulina. It can be mixed with raw honey or goat’s milk yogurt! The box included a small packet of honey to try with this mask. I mixed mine with water and left it on for 20 minutes and it is definitely like your green juice in the morning – it smells gross, it’s not luxurious, but you keep doing it because you know it’s good for you.

Organic Herbal Toner – The toner is an aloe vera and witch hazel base that balances the skin. The third ingredient is “alcohol (drinkable grape alcohol)” and that made me a little nervous to use it, but the Dr. Alkaitis booklet actually addressed this concern stating “unlike de-natured alcohol that us mostly used, our organic grape alcohol is highly beneficial for your skin and facilitates the nutrient rich composition to be optimally absorbed by your skin.” I have used this twice and haven’t experienced any burning or drying from it.

Organic Nourishing Treatment Oil – This oil contains 15 antioxidant rich and anti-inflammatory herbs in a base of Organic Jojoba, St. John’s Wart, and Andean Mountain Rose Hip Seed oils. I can be used on the face, body, hair, and nails. I have not tried this yet! I have a few oils going right now and I want finish some up before I open a new one. I am disappoint that this high end oil comes in a plastic bottle – given the price point, I would expect glass packaging.

Simple Beauty – Dead Sea Salt

Dead sea salt is comprised of minerals that can be very beneficial for the skin. Zinc and sulfur can reduce and prevent acne. Potassium can balance water content of the skin by reducing puffiness and water retention. Calcium balances sebum production and encourages skin hydration. Dead sea salt can help sooth eczema, prevent acne, reduce inflammation, reduce the appearance of pores, and treat dandruff.  Dead sea salt is so versatile for hair, body, and skin health! How you want to use it is really up to your level of comfort whether it be a toner, face or body scrub, or cleansing scalp treatment.

This post is a little different because I don’t have a lot of experience with dead sea salt in my skincare. The reason I did the research for this post is because I bought a new face mist (Little Barn Apothecary Coconut and Pear Refreshing Mineral Mist) that had dead sea salt in it and I wanted to learn why the company would include that in their product. I do really like the face mist because it offers something none of my other sprays have, but I don’t find it to be anything life changing.

In looking up information for this post, I found a few recipes for DIY dead sea salt products that really piqued my interest:

Mineral Face Mist – 1 cup of distilled with 1 tablespoon dead sea salt – bring the water to a boil and add in sea salt and store in a glass spray bottle.

BUT that’s only the beginning – I think you could make the spray with an aloe base instead of water, making it a more well rounded face mist and if you don’t have skin sensitivities you could even add in essential oils for more benefits. Oily skins might like geranium, ylang ylang, or tea tree. And lavender, basil, chamomile, and juniper can be good to heal and sooth.

The other DIY that seemed really cool was a Dead Sea Salt Body Scrub – 1 cup of dead sea salt and 1/3 to 1/2 cup carrier oil (I would probably use a thicker oil like camellia or coconut) and essential oils for scent and store in a glass jar.

Simple Beauty Products – Rose Water

Rose Water has almost an endless number of benefits and uses. Rose water is an astringent, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and high in antioxidants. It can be sprayed on your hair and scalp to condition the hair and soothe scalp irritations like dandruff. Rose water can be used like aromatherapy to help reduce stress and anxiety to help you feel more relaxed and sleep better. For the skin, it can help maintain the skin’s pH balance, reduce acne and eczema, and add additional hydration.

I buy my Rose Water on Amazon and usually spend $10.00 – 15.00. The current bottle I’m using has an awful firehose spray – it’s not a deal breaker but it also makes it a little unpleasant to use. I look for rose water that is make from rose distillate (or hydrosol) and organic. Rose water made from distillation maintains the benefits of rose water, some rose water toners may be water mixed with rose essential oil . I love using rose water as a hydrating toner in my skin care routine, it’s so refreshing and relaxing. I haven’t tried it on my hair or scalp, though I may because I do get dandruff from time to time.

The Takeaway

I bought my toner at Ulta a little over a week ago and have used it once a day since then. I picked out this toner because I love to try new face mists – I  keep most of my skincare the same, but toner is one step that I like experimenting with. I usually go for hydrating face mists/essences like Belif Hungarian Water Essence or Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Cucumber, and Green Tea. I liked that this toner has a base of aloe juice and has CoQ10, Vitamin C, tea extracts, and fruit stem cells. The price was right and the bottle was pretty big so I decided to give it a try.

A minor complaint it that the mist is not fine and gentle, it sprays a ton in a small area. I could overlook that if I really liked what was being blasted on my face, but I don’t. THe toner burns the dryer areas on my face around my eyes and cheek bones. I have dry skin, but I take good care of it, and my eye area can be dry and sensitive, but I don’t usually have any issues with it… except with this mist. I kept using it thinking that it wasn’t really burning or maybe it would stop irritating my face, but nope. Looking over the ingredient list, my best guess for the irritation/burning is alcohol in it. Admittedly, I knew there was alcohol  in this toner before I bought it. This toner has Phenethyl Alcohol for fragrance and inhibiting the growth of bacteria – according to my research fragrance alcohols are similar to simple alcohols and can be drying and irritating. Normally, I would have never bought a toner with alcohol in it, but it was pretty far down on the ingredient list, I liked other ingredients, and I was feeling adventurous and wanted to try something from brand I really hadn’t heard of. Unfortunately, the formula just really does not work with my skin.

Hard pass if you have dry or sensitive skin; the other ingredients don’t outweigh the alcohol in this toner.
