I was on the hunt for a low carb barbecue sauce and almost every recipe had a base of sugar free ketchup – something I don’t have access too! As a general rule, I prefer to make my food as simply as possible, with minimal processed foods – since I couldn’t find a recipe or product that fitted my needs, I created one!
This barbecue sauce tastes just like a classic sweet and tangy sauce. As prepared, the barbecue sauce has 1 gram of carbs per every 2 tablespoons! This sauce is a solid, simple base, but the sky is the limit depending on your tastes. – you could add red pepper flakes for heat, or some maple extract and more stevia for extra sweetness, or even some chipotle sauce for a richer smoky flavor!
Low Carb Classic Barbecue Sauce
1 cup water
35g tomato paste
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp liquid smoke
1 tbp garlic powder
1 tbp onion powder
1 tbp mustard powder
1/2 tsp stevia (3-4 drops liquid stevia)
1/4 tsp xanthan gum
In a small saucepan, combine water, tomato paste, and seasonings and bring to a simmer. Stir occasionally until the tomato paste and water are fully combined. Sprinkle the xanthan gum over the sauce and stir in quickly to avoid clumps. Continue simmering on low for 10-60 minutes, the sauces flavors will develop more the longer it simmers.
I store my sauce in the fridge for up to a week.
Serving 2 tbsp – 8 servings total (though it depends on how long you let it simmer/how far it reduces – you should make at least 7 servings out of your total to get the below nutrition)
