Silicone and Sulfate Free Hair Routine | Dry, Damaged, Over Processed

.

I bleached the living bajeezus out of my hair exactly one year ago this month and I have been trying ever since to bring my hair back to life. My hair was fried and textured, extremely dry (so was my scalp), and frizzy with most of the damage from the mid-shaft to the ends. I’ve blown through a lot of hair products looking for ones that will hydrate and smooth my hair and make it look healthy and silky instead of resembling a Barbie whose hair has been styled 300 times by a 6 year old.

I know time and frequent trims have really helped heal my hair, but I have finally pieced together a hair routine that is really perfect for my hair. If you have overworked hair, some of these products might be good for you too! (Also, not only is my hair over processed, it is naturally thick and coarse so I can go really hard on heavy hair products without them weighing my hair down – some of these might be too heavy for fine or thin hair).

Olaplex No 3 – This is one of the few products that I actually believe heals and repairs the hair. This treatment repairs the bonds in the hair that are damaged by coloring/bleaching/heat styling/etc.

Brigeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-exfoliating Shampoo – I have a dry, flakey scalp and this shampoo (in conjunction with Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment) really does help keep my scalp happier longer. The grit in it definitely does not exfoliate at all, it might of you have finer hair, but it cleans with stripping and soothes my scalp.

I’m not really loyal to any one conditioner, I just try to use one that is silicone free and I’m currently using Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask, but I also like Klorane Nourishing Conditioner with Mango Butter and Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment.

Christophe Robin Moisturizing Hair Oil with Lavender – I put a small dollop of this in towel dried hair and let my hair air dry over night (sometimes I’ll wrap it in an Aquis Turban – a microfiber hair wrap that doesn’t snag or damage your hair ). In them morning, my hair is looking a bit greasy, but I then straighten my hair using that excess product as a heat protectant. After my hair is styled, the grease ball look is gone and it is clean and shiny.

Christophe Robin Moisturizing Hair Cream – I love this for a style refresh between washes because it adds smoothness and shine without weighing it down or making the hair look greasy. I used to always use oils to tame my hair every morning, but I love that this adds smoothness and shine without ever making it look greasy.

Simple Beauty – Apple Cider Vingar

Apple cider vinegar is fantastic for beauty both inside and out. ACV is antibacterial, anti-fungal, and balances your body and skins pH. Drinking ACV can support digestion while using it topically can balance your skin. Using diluted ACV as a hair rinse can break down product build up on the scalp and remove yeast/fungus that can cause dandruff. It can also balance the pH of your scalp and regulate oil production. Much like the skin, hair has an acid mantle that can be disrupted making the hair appear duller and frizzier and more likely to break and using and ACV rinse can balance the hair’s pH level. Diluted apple cider vinegar can also be used as a exfoliating toner, antibacterial treatment for acne, balance the production of sebum.

I have tried ACV on my skin as a daily toner- despite my better judgement – and it was just too harsh on my skin. I wouldn’t recommend it because the pH is all wrong, but I know a lot of people use it and love it. I do like to use ACV mixed into benonite clay as a quick mask.

I do love apple cider vinegar for my hair! My hair is a disaster – I have hard water, a crappy water softener, naturally coarse hair, and color treated, damaged and bleached hair. Recently, I had a Malibu Treatment at a salon to have the mineral deposits from our well water removed from my hair. I had great hair for three days… until I washed my hair at home and I was back to square one. After internet some research, I decided to to try an ACV rinse (I’ve heard about this for years, but hadn’t really delved into it). I’ve done four rinsed so far and I have noticed a big improvement in my dandruff and my hair is softer and needs less oils/leave-ins to feel like actually human hair. I wash my hair every 3-4 days and use a co-wash first, then ACV rinse, and finally conditioning mask. I’m honestly shocked it has made an improvement in my scalp and hair health! I will say, it’s not a complete miracle (at least not yet) and it does just temporarily relieve my dandruff and itchy scalp. I am hoping that overtime it can improve my scalp health to the point where I don’t experience the itchy, flaky skin at all.

This year it will be {ROUGE: November 3-6 AND November 10-15 code 20FORROUGE} and {VIB dates + code, when released}. This sale gives you 20% off of everything, no exceptions!

I’ve been slowly curating my cart for weeks because I can go a little crazy sometimes and make impulsive purchases just because they are on sale! This year I’ve picked out a few special items, a few essentials, and I even got suckered into a Sephora Favorites box!

Visart Warm Neutral Eyeshadow Palette – This was the first thing to go into my cart! A Visart palette was in and out of my cart 100 times last year and completely regretted it. I don’t own anything by the brand yet, but the Warm Neutral Palette looks like a fantastic everyday palette for me.

Bobby Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Based Moisturizer – This was one of the first high end skincare products I ever purchased almost 10 years ago! I haven’t bought it again since that first tub and my skin has changed a lot, but I decided kind of nostalgically to try it again. I will probably use it as a primer in addition to my current routine, rather than using it in place of my moisturizer.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask – I usually pick up a lip mask every sale because winter is coming. The past years I’ve bought the Bite Beauty Agave Mask and the Fresh Mask and I wasn’t really blown away by either so I’m excited to try something new!

Jo Malone London Basil and Neroli Cologne – I’m a little nervous about this purchase because I have only smelled this perfume and it was months ago… but I loved it and I couldn’t stop smelling myself throughout the day! I hope it’s as wonderful as I remember – earthy and citrusy and fresh.

Briogio Ultimate Hair Goals Kit – I was planning on stocking up on the the Briogio Don’t Despair Repair Mask and this kit is the same price and an 8oz jar and includes an 8oz jar of the mask plus 3 deluxe samples of their Rosarco Blow Dry Perfection and Heat Protectant Creme, Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-in Conditioning Spray, and Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo. I know I like the leave-in conditioner and I am really excited to try the shampoo because my scalp get so dry and flakey in the winter!

Briogio Don’t Despair Repair Gel-to-Oil Overnight Treatment – This is meant to hydrate, strengthen, smooth, and soften the hair – my hair and scalp is hella dry and damaged and I’ve never tried an overnight treatment. I like the brand because it’s silicone free so I feel like their conditioning products actually do something more than just coating the hair.

Sephora Favorite Soko to Tokyo – I have never bought a Sephora Favorites box before because I usually feel like there’s 2-3 products I like and the rest will most likely go to waste. This box is perfection! It’s a combination of products I know I love (Tatcha Polished and belif True Cream Aqua Bomb) and products that I really want to try (SKII Facial Treatment Essence).

Honorable Mention: ABH Subculture – I’m in LOVE with these colors but I’m not sure if I can handle the formula – I’m just not sure if I can work with it so it’s hanging out in my cart and I will probably just decided as I’m checking out…

Update: Between writing and posting, the Sephora Favorites Soko to Tokyo has gone out of stock and Kevin Aucoin The Sculpting Contour Powder and snuck into my cart.

Simple Beauty – Argan Oil

I love beauty products of all kinds and sometimes I enjoy a good, simple product. This post is part of a series sharing my favorite one ingredient beauty products. If your are into simple beauty routines, some of the products in this series might fit really well into your collection!

Argan oil is is a rich oil high in anti-oxidants, linoleic acid, omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin A and vitamin E. It is non-comedogenic and is suitable to use on the face, body, and hair. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties and linoleic acid content, it can reduce inflammation and redness caused by acne. It has a smaller molecule size, which means it will sink into the skin quickly. Vitamin E is very soothing and healing for the skin so argan can be great for eczema, razor burn, dry skin, and stretch marks. Argan oil can be used on the hair to smooth frizz, retain moisture, and soften.

I have used Josie Maran Argan Oil and few random organic, cold-pressed argon oils and i can honestly say I didn’t notice a different between the oils. I know Josie Maran makes an Argan Oil Light, but I have not tried that one. I really enjoy argan oil for my hair especially. It is a little heavier and oilier than other plain beauty oils that I own and my hair drinks up oil like nothing else so the heavier, the better for me! I do wait until after styling to use argan because if I put it on my dry hair before straightening it, the oil can’t take the heat and just smells horrendous and that smell lingers all day! Because it is a bit heavier oil, I also like using argan oil on dermatitis is get on my body. Even thought argan is appropriate for the face, it’s a little too heavy for me – I don’t like the nutty scent and it never really fully sinks into my skin.

In a Few Words
A rich hair mask for overworked hair.

“When your active lifestyle is hard on your hair, it can look and feel overworked: dull, brittle and lifeless. This velvety mask is made to replenish and infuse deep moisture, leaving your hair revitalized, touchably soft, recharged—and ready to take on the rest of you day.” Carol’s Daughter Rhassoul Clay Softening Hair Mask comes in a 12 oz tub and sells for about $15.00.

I have very dry, damaged hair… overworked is the perfect adjective for it! In the past 12 months my hair has gone from red to silver to brown so it has been put through the wringer and you can definitely tell. Even in it’s natural state, my hair is dry and coarse. I bought mask on Amazon and have used it about six times. I was intrigued my this product because I don’t see many hair products using clay an after some internet research on rhassoul clay (AKA red Moroccan clay) I decided it was worth a try! I use the mask once a week and will either leave it on for an hour or so under a plastic cap or I will add heat (a blow dryer) and leave it on for 15 minutes. I apply this mask form root to tip because both the rhassoul clay and salicylic acid are good for scalp health. The first time I used the mask I was absolutely blown away! It intensely smoothed and softened my hair, defined my natural waves, and reduced frizz. My hair felt great until the next time I washed it 6 days later. I really think anyone could use this mask. While it is thick, it is not heavy and does wash out completely so it won’t weigh down your hair. The mask smells like chai spices to me and, while I do like the smell, I think it’s noteworthy to mention that fragrance is in the first 10 ingredients.

The Carol’s Daughter Rhassoul Clay Hair Softening Mask is a fantastic deep conditioner for hair that needs extra TLC.
