Honey Harvest | Busy Bees

.

This spring brings to a close or first year of keeping bees on the farm… and I turned out to be a pretty poor bee keeper. Our hive made it through the majority of the winter, but sometime in the last year, our entire hive died. We are sure what happened – we didn’t have a particularly bad cold spell and they had plenty of honey left.

I had decided to not collect honey from the bees last fall, that way I would not have to feed the bees sugar water all winter. Because we hadn’t harvested in the fall, there was so much honey left in the hive!

To harvest the honey, we removed the combs from the hive and set up a double boiler on the stove with a strainer covered by a pot lid set over a stainless steel bowl. We took pieces of the comb and crushed them in the strainer, letting the honey drip into the bowl over a pot of boiling water. Using a pot lid over the strainer let the comb warm up more easily, warm honey dripped quicker and made separating the honey from the comb easier.

I haven’t finished my research to figure out what we will do with the comb, but I’m hoping to make some fun candles or balm out of bees wax!

We have only harvested half of our hive and have TEN pints of honey! And since we don’t really eat sugar regularly (I wanted bees for a hobby, not necessarily for the honey), everyone we know will be getting honey from us this spring!

Skincare Winter Essentials – 2017

Winter can really wreak havoc on your skin – between the cold outside and the dry air inside, every last drop of life and hydration gets drawn out of your skin during the winter months. Some simple changes can help hydrate your skin and seal the moisture in, saving you from tight, itchy, irritated skin.

Hydrating Masks

First Aid Beauty – Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask – This is a great mask that can be done in 10 minutes in the morning. It not only hydrates the skin, but is also very soothing (colloidal oatmeal is second ingredient) for dry, itchy skin. I love it as an SOS product if I wake up with very irritated skin.

Josh Rosebrook – Advanced Hydration Mask – I recently got this in The Detox Box and fell in love. A little goes a long way and it is just a 20 minute wash-off mask that hydrates and regenerates the skin. I noticed an immediate difference after using this mask and have started using it at least once a week.

Occlusive Moisturizers – I live and breathe by gel moisturizers, but in the winter I need something that hydrates and seals in the skin’s moisture, but is still lightweight.

Dr. Jart+ – Ceramidin Gel-Cream – I use this as a PM moisturizer. It’s extremely hydrating and ceramides support the skin’s barrier function to help retain moisture. It looks strange – it’s a gel with little bits of encapsulated ceramides – but it smooths on your skin like a lightweight cream.

belif – True Cream Moisturizing Bomb – Probably the only cream I will comfortably put on my face (it’s just a texture thing). It is thick and rich and hydrating, but absorbs quick and doesn’t sit on top of the skin.

Lip Balm

First Aid Beauty – Ultra Repair Intensive Lip Balm – The. Best. Balm. Ever. I have tried everything from the Bite Agave Mask to plain Aquaphor and nothing holds a candle to this balm. It has a mild chocolate NECCO wafer taste that doesn’t fight with coffee (VERY IMPORTANT), stays on forever, and heals and hydrates.

Hydrating Body Care

Soap & Glory – The Righteous Body Butter – The reason why I pick this body butter over all others is because the scent is very mild and dissipates quickly. I hate when my body lotion battle with all of the other scents going on with my hair, perfume, etc.

Honorable mention to Glossier’s Body Hero Daily Oil Wash to a body cleansing oil on my current wish list because there is no way I’m going take cooler showers to save my skin so instead I’ll add a moisturizing body wash.

November 2017 Subscription Box Review – BoxyCharm and Sephora

BoxyCharm November 2017 – Value $120.00

BoxyCharm x Luxie – Quad Eye Travel Set Brushes
While I wouldn’t really purchase Luxie brushes, I have received a few in different subscription boxes and I do like them. I would have preferred to get full sized brushes, but I can see myself using 1-2 of these regularly. All of Luxie’s brushes are vegan and cruelty free too!

CoverFX – Illuminating Setting Spray
I was really stoked about this because it is one of my best friend’s favorite setting sprays. I had recently visited her, tried it out, and decided to buy it. Then,  two days, later BoxyCharm released a preview of this product! The is glitter in this spray so it may not be for everyone.

KNC Beauty – All-Natural Collagen Infused Lip Mask – set of 3
I have not tried these out yet, I’m saving them for special occasions. 🙂

Laqa & Co – Cloud Lip – Storm
I really like this formula – it’s like a very pigmented matte balm. It’s really comfortable, wears for a few hours, and fades very evenly. I didn’t like the deep berry color that was in my box, but the formula is spot on.

Winky Lux – Kitten Palette
First of all, this packaging, whoever designed it deserves and A+ because I was sucked right in. All of the shadows are on the drier side, but not unworkable. If you go too hard on the mattes, they can blend away, and the shimmers are nice, but not intense.

Sephora PLAY! November 2017 – Value $50.00

Caudalie – Vinosource SOS Thirst Quenching Serum
I’ve been using this as my AM serum for 4-5 days now and I’m not blown away but I also don’t think a serum is something you can really get a good grasp on with a small sample. This a basically grape water and hyaluronic acid, so you might want to check it out if you’re in the market for a new hyaluronic acid!

Marc Jacobs – Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara
I’ve gotten quite a few samples in the past and it’s is a solid volumizing mascara (but not really worth the price tag).

MoroccanOil – Moroccan Oil Treatment
I love this oil so much EXCEPT it’s filled with silicone and I’ve been weaning those out of my hair routine so I will be passing it along. But it does literally miracles for dry, frizzy hair.

Origins – Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask to Clear Pores
I have used this mask on and off for years and I really like it. It does a great job of pulling gunk out of the skin so be sure to use it when you don’t have anything special going on because it will pull some clogged pores to a head
This month’s Play! also came with a high pigment Sephora brand gloss (bad color, tasted like vanilla poisoned chemicals) and a Burberry Brit sample, both of which I have thrown out. Bad blogger.

Sephora VIB Sale Cart Fall 2017

The most wonderful time of the year is here! The Sephora Rouge/VIB sale happens every year around the end of October or beginning of November. This year it will be {ROUGE: November 3-6 AND November 10-15 code 20FORROUGE} and {VIB dates + code, when released}. This sale gives you 20% off of everything, no exceptions!

I’ve been slowly curating my cart for weeks because I can go a little crazy sometimes and make impulsive purchases just because they are on sale! This year I’ve picked out a few special items, a few essentials, and I even got suckered into a Sephora Favorites box!

Visart Warm Neutral Eyeshadow Palette – This was the first thing to go into my cart! A Visart palette was in and out of my cart 100 times last year and completely regretted it. I don’t own anything by the brand yet, but the Warm Neutral Palette looks like a fantastic everyday palette for me.

Bobby Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Based Moisturizer – This was one of the first high end skincare products I ever purchased almost 10 years ago! I haven’t bought it again since that first tub and my skin has changed a lot, but I decided kind of nostalgically to try it again. I will probably use it as a primer in addition to my current routine, rather than using it in place of my moisturizer.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask – I usually pick up a lip mask every sale because winter is coming. The past years I’ve bought the Bite Beauty Agave Mask and the Fresh Mask and I wasn’t really blown away by either so I’m excited to try something new!

Jo Malone London Basil and Neroli Cologne – I’m a little nervous about this purchase because I have only smelled this perfume and it was months ago… but I loved it and I couldn’t stop smelling myself throughout the day! I hope it’s as wonderful as I remember – earthy and citrusy and fresh.

Briogio Ultimate Hair Goals Kit – I was planning on stocking up on the the Briogio Don’t Despair Repair Mask and this kit is the same price and an 8oz jar and includes an 8oz jar of the mask plus 3 deluxe samples of their Rosarco Blow Dry Perfection and Heat Protectant Creme, Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-in Conditioning Spray, and Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo. I know I like the leave-in conditioner and I am really excited to try the shampoo because my scalp get so dry and flakey in the winter!

Briogio Don’t Despair Repair Gel-to-Oil Overnight Treatment – This is meant to hydrate, strengthen, smooth, and soften the hair – my hair and scalp is hella dry and damaged and I’ve never tried an overnight treatment. I like the brand because it’s silicone free so I feel like their conditioning products actually do something more than just coating the hair.

Sephora Favorite Soko to Tokyo – I have never bought a Sephora Favorites box before because I usually feel like there’s 2-3 products I like and the rest will most likely go to waste. This box is perfection! It’s a combination of products I know I love (Tatcha Polished and belif True Cream Aqua Bomb) and products that I really want to try (SKII Facial Treatment Essence).

Honorable Mention: ABH Subculture – I’m in LOVE with these colors but I’m not sure if I can handle the formula – I’m just not sure if I can work with it so it’s hanging out in my cart and I will probably just decided as I’m checking out…

Update: Between writing and posting, the Sephora Favorites Soko to Tokyo has gone out of stock and Kevin Aucoin The Sculpting Contour Powder and snuck into my cart.

Top 5 Podcasts – Brain Candy

Here lies a list of my favorite podcast that teach the most random and interesting things about current events, economics, technology,  business, and absolutely everything in between.

Here lies a list of my favorite podcast that teach the most random and interesting things about current events, economics, technology,  business, and absolutely everything in between.

I spend a shameful amount of time listening to podcasts and I love a wide range of genres from true crime to comedy . I love podcasts that are interesting, entertaining, and educational – I feel slightly more accomplished listening to podcasts that teach me something new about the world.

Stuff You Should KnowStuff You Should Know

Stuff You Should Know is eclectic podcast that explains literally everything under the sun in an extremely relatable way. The two hosts are experts on the material and yet casual and conversational. Listening to this podcast is like sitting at your local bar eavesdropping on two friends nerding out over their favorite topic du jour at the next table over. Some great episodes are “How the Hyperloop Will Work”, “How Ketchup Works”, “Do Motivational Speakers Motivate People”, and “What is Ghost Fishing.”

Make Me Smart with Kai and MollyMake Me Smart

Make Me Smart is from the makers of Marketplace and covers business, economics, and culture. Kai and Molly have a great banter and really take the time to discuss and explore topics. Most episodes feature an interview with a leader in their field and the final question is always “What’s something you thought you knew, but later found out you were wrong about?” Some of my favorite episodes have been “Reddit CEO Steve Huffman is not Horsing Around” and “Beware the Nurtured Narrative”.

Planet MoneyPlanet Money

Planet Money was birthed from This American Life’s coverage of the housing market collapse and examines economics in a hands-on way. The reporters learn about off shore banking by setting up their own shell company (Unbelizable Inc.) in “We Set Up an Off Shore Company in a Tax Haven”. And they buy 100 barrels of oil and follow it through the process of getting out of the ground and in to a gas tank in a series starting with “We Buy Oil”. The show truly makes learning about economics entertaining.

Freakonomics RadioFreakonomics Radio

Freakonomics is a wonderful combination of storytelling and teaching economic theories and principles – think This American Life meets Econ 101. Some standout episodes are “Ten Ideas to Make Politics Less Rotten”, “Do Boycotts Work”, and “Should We Really Behave Like Economists Say We Do”.

Note to Self

Note to Self

Note to Self examines what it is like to thrive in our modern, technology-filled world. It asks tough questions that challenge the role of technology in our lives. I really loved their program Infomagical, a week long project that helps you reflect on your relationship with technology.

Juliette Has a Gun – Anyway – Review

In a few words:
A unique, subtle everyday fragrance.

Anyway by Juliette has a Gun has “a simple and original formula. Just fifteen ingredients, going right back to basics, only keeping the best. A blend of musks, woods and citrus notes… comes together in a bright, subtle and persistent trail.  Far from an anonymous scent “Anyway” is a signature fragrance, ready to unite with the feminine as much as the masculine.”

The Takeaway

I received this fragrance in my Scentbird subscription and immediately fell in love (it is at the top of my Sephora Wishlist). Anyway smells like a hundred year old library on a college campus. It’s a very cozy scent that smells like musk and leather and old wood. It has a mustiness that reminds me of mornings in a little lake cottage, but it finishes clean and soapy. This truly could become my everyday scent –  I have a very hard time committing to fragrances but Anyway is everything I’ve ever wanted. I have already blown though my first bottle, put it in my queue to get again next month, and am seriously considering buying a full sized bottle.

A wonderful unisex fragrance that is both musky and clean.
